The Show
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to take the family to a car show. My wife and kids don’t really see the point, but they humor me. To them, it’s walking through crowds of people in order to look at other people’s cars. Yeah, sometimes the festivals focus on rich guys’ post retirement projects – something for the rest of us to drool over. These kits, rebuilt classics or muscle cars are awesome, but I tend to gravitate toward the difference. I find myself standing over the open hoods of souped up rockets belonging to guys (or girls) who dump their paychecks and weekends into the nuts and bolts of regular cars. But, they’re not regular cars – not anymore. They may look like regular cars, even have regular VIN numbers. They even came from regular factories and require standard insurance. But, when you sit in them or better yet when you drive them – they’re different. These cars belong to people who rev engines and stare you down at red lights. The ones who find ways to better performance and don’t wait for something to break before fixing it. They don’t typically have deep pockets – they just want to be faster – better.
The Difference
Hard work. It’s not buying a leg up, it’s earning it through trial and error. There’s nothing wrong with having the financial means, but when you earn it through hard work- that’s different. When you have to earn it, you tend to appreciate it more. You don’t forget what you had to go through in order to get there. What you’ve learned.
